Nephew Jim Jr.'s Final Notes
Of the aunts and uncles who had "escaped from Altoona" in the 1950's (Pauline to Colorado,
Grace to Florida, Joe and Frank to California), Joe was the only one to return to Altoona for
an extended period after retirement. I would see him a few times a year while visiting my dad
for holidays. He had a very pleasant demeanor, and of course had interesting stories to tell.
I didn't know until preparing this memoir that he had started and run multiple businesses in
California, and had close ties to political leaders in Los Angeles at the time.
