As the moon orbits
around the Earth over the course of a month, it shows different phases, from a totally
illuminated full moon, through this type of quarter moon, to a thin crescent shape, and
then to a new moon which can't be seen at all since the lighted side is facing away from
the earth.

If you move your finger vertically in the middle of this image, you'll notice
a lot of texture, which is the side lit craters and mountains of the moon that are best
seen in the area between the shadow and lighted parts of the lunar surface.,
