Dearest Mother,

Just a few lines letting you know that I'm O.K. and hoping that all at home are the same.

Well mother, I'm still here in the hospital and still having it pretty nice.

I hope mother, that you're not worrying about me because I'm really coming along O.K. The doctor redressed my arm today and it's healing up pretty well.

We played bingo here in the ward mother, and I won two games. The first game I won was a deck of playing cards and a mirror and the second time I won a little bag of candy + a Coca Cola. I was pretty lucky to win twice, a lot didn't even win once.

Well mother, I guess this is all for now so I'll close with love to you mother dear, daddy and the kids.

   Your loving Son,

"Jimmy"

Supplemental Notes, Quotes, and Anecdotes:

Bingo with Grandmother:

Dad mentions playing Bingo in his hospital ward in this letter, which reminds me of a time not long after I got my driver's license. My grandmother (Dad's "Dearest Mother") loved to play bingo, and she would often arrange to have me drive her to the nearby (10 miles or so) mountain town of Ashville for weekend evening bingo games at a large community hall. While I wasn't a true fan of the game, it did allow me to spend some quality time with my grandmother and put some respectable mileage on my newly minted driver's license!
